Maryland Motorcycles and Express Toll Lanes

Dear Maryland Delegates _____ (Maryland residents can look up their delegates here mdelect.net/")
This is to urge your support for the inclusion of motorcycles as part of Maryland’s Statewide Express Toll Lanes Network Initiative. The new Express Toll Lanes system needs to allow, encourage and provide financial incentives (free or reduced toll) to motorcycles.
Some of the many reasons that this makes sound socio-economic and environmental sense are as follows:
1) Safety – keeping motorcycles moving when traffic slows will reduce overall accident potential, decrease injury potential to the motorcyclist and further reduce the risk of auto/motorcycle collisions, especially devastating rear end impacts to motorcycles.
2) Congestion relief– motorcycles are part of the solution to traffic congestion, they take up less space are light and agile and will reduce delays while not impeding other traffic. Financial incentives for motorcycles to access to the ETL system will enhance congestion relief.
3) Environment – motorcycles use much less fuel than the standard commuter vehicle, less fuel means energy savings and less overall pollution – this is a plus for meeting air quality coals and reducing atmospheric deposition in the Chesapeake Bay.
4) Lower Highway Maintenance costs - due to their lower weight motorcycles have almost negligible impact on wear and tear of roadways resulting in lower operation and maintenance costs of our roadways.
In summation, the motorcycle is an efficient means of personal transportation that reduces fuel consumption, road wear and traffic and parking congestion. The integration of this beneficial transport mode in the Maryland’s Statewide Express Toll Lanes Network Initiative will enhance safety and have an overall beneficial impact for all commuters.
Thank you for your attention and I would appreciate your follow up response to this request.
Sincerely,
